Temple University provides health and prescription coverage for certain eligible employees of Temple University and Temple University Health System who enrolled and made the appropriate level of contributions to the post-retirement prefunding plan prior to retirement at age 62 or older.

Employees Considering Retirement

  • Please notify the Benefits Administration Department at least four months prior to your retirement date.
  • If you have an account with TIAA and/or Fidelity, you will need to contact them directly.

  • Ensure that your department is given proper notice.
  • Contact your local social security office for information about enrolling in Medicare Parts A and B.
  • Medical benefits are provided through Independence Blue Cross and prescription drug benefits are provided by CVS Caremark and SilverScript, an affiliate of CVS Caremark. Your benefits vary depending on whether or not you are Medicare-eligible.

Eligible pre-65 (non-Medicare) retirees are provided prescription drug coverage through CVS Caremark.

You pay

  • 10% of the cost of generic drugs.
  • 20% of the cost of preferred brand name drugs.
  • 30% of the cost of nonpreferred brand name drugs.

Eligible Post-65 (Medicare) Retiree Benefits

Temple University offers medical and prescription drug coverage to Medicare-eligible retirees. There are no additional premiums paid to Temple University for your medical or prescription drug coverage. If you are Medicare-eligible, you MUST enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B.

Medical Benefits 

Employees who elect to retire at age 65 and older are eligible for the Retiree 65 Special program through Independence Blue Cross. This program supplements the Medicare Parts A and B coverage. Information about Medicare.

Prescription Drug Benefit

The retiree prescription benefits are covered through CVS Caremark | Silverscript. Find more information on the Silverscript website. You do not have to enroll in Medicare Part D yourself; the entire process is handled for eligible retirees by Temple University.

Employees Not Eligible for Retiree Benefits

If you are not eligible for retiree benefits through Temple University, an option you may wish to explore is individual coverage through Independence Blue Cross (IBC). For additional information on individual health coverage, refer to the IBC website.

Transition to Retirement Program for Faculty

The purpose of the Transition to Retirement program is to provide a voluntary program in which full-time faculty can transition to retirement over a period of up to three years. Participation in the program is on a voluntary basis and is subject to the university’s policies which prohibit discrimination.
